SEVEN-time world champion Marco Antonio Barrera believes his experience will help him overcome Amir Khan on Saturday.

The 22-year-old Bolton lightweight is in confident mood ahead of his showdown with the Mexican legend at the MEN Arena. But Barrera believes he still has the ammunition to defeat the Commonwealth champion.

He said: “I’ve seen his last five fights; he is a young, fast fighter with power but my experience will be the difference in the ring.

“I’ve seen a couple of things he does wrong and a couple of things he does right, but the difference on Saturday will be who wants to win it more.”

Barrera, who has come out of retirement to take the fight, added: “I really didn’t want to retire but just wanted to get out of my Golden Boy contract, and retiring was the fastest way to do that.

“But I have been given the opportunity to come here and win and I will take it. I’m a warrior and I will fight anybody.”

The Mexican will be making only his second appearance on these shores since defeating Paul Lloyd in London 10 years ago.

But he will be best remembered by the British public for his masterclass against Naseem Hamed for the vacant IBO featherweight belt in April 2001.

And the Central American ace is confident he can produce a similar performance against Khan.

“When I beat Hamed it was like graduating out of college,” he said. “It was the fight to take me to the next stage.

“Now I don’t want to retire before I’ve won my fourth division title. I’ve won it at three different divisions and now I want to do it at lightweight - this is my biggest goal.

“I don’t think I will be different at 35. The old fighters are on the move now: Bernard Hopkins is 43, Shane Mosley just beat Antonio Margarito, and Juan Manuel Marquez is 35 and he just beat Juan Diaz.

“What you learn you never forget - and I’ll prove that on Saturday.”
