Vina Alarba 2005, £5.29, Booths As a regional retailer Booths are able to buy some wines just not made in large enough quantities to meet the needs of national supermarkets. This is one, a four-year-old red made from Grenache grapes grown on old vines between 40 and 100 years old. It’s from a bodega in the region of Calatayud south east of Zaragoza and is robust with soft tannins and 14 per cent alcohol. Full of character and a steal at this price.

Ara Resolute Sauvignon Blanc 2007, £13.99, Majestic If you adore Sauvignon Blanc and agree that right now nobody makes it quite like they do in New Zealand’s Marlborough region you’ll have to try this one. You’ll need the excuse of a special occasion because it’s not cheap but it is special. No oak barrels are used for fear of masking the big fruit flavours and the result is a beautifully clean, white peach wine. If the price is worrying remember it’s no more than you’d pay in a restaurant for something far below this quality
