MEMBERS of Bolton’s Kurdish community celebrated their New Year with song, dance and plenty of fun.

Hundreds attended the 3D Centre in Bella Street, Deane, on Saturday for the 2709 Newroz event, organised by the Lancashire Kurdish Cultural Association (LKCA).

The organisation is made up of around 30 volunteers from Kurdish families and community groups such as Bolton at Home and Great Lever Neighbourhood Management.

This year’s event included national songs, poetry readings, competitions, children’s activities and live music from two renowned Kurdish singers, Tara Rasul and Dlzar Shanga.

Chairman Sulleyman Mohammed said: “Many refugees, asylum seekers and other minority groups live alone and in isolation. The aim of the group is to bring people together and to provide a social space for celebrations like this, not just for Kurdish people but members of the community.”

The LKCA, which used to be based in Wigan, was renamed last year and holds weekly meetings at various locations in Bolton.

There are approximately 1,000 Kurdish people living in the borough.
