HILTON Tameside’s Jake Shaw was the star of the final week of the Bolton Table Tennis League season.

He helped his team to lift the Warburton Cup, then won three of the four finals in which he competed at the closed championships which were held at Horwich’s Hilton Centre on Monday.

The highlight was his win over Wharton’s Barry Elliott at the championships which saw him become the Bolton singles champion.

Jake always appeared to be in control, winning in three straight games 11-3, 12-10 and 12-10 to lift the title.

His first success on the night was beating Radcliffe CC’s wily campaigner Nigel Hallows in the final of the handicapped singles. The first game was long and evenly balanced and Nigel eventually clinched it 16-14.

Jake quickly recovered to win the next three, 11-8,11-9, and 11-9.

Partnered by Ramsbottom A’s Mark Ramsbottom, his next success was the level doubles competition. Their opponents, Lindsey Reynolds and Paul Cicchelli, of Burning Desire, won the first game 11-4.

This was cancelled out when Shaw and Ramsbottom won the second 11-8. Reynolds and Cicchelli took the third 11-9 but, in the final two games, Shaw and Ramsbottom finished strongly, winning the fourth 11-5 and the deciding fifth 11-4.

The junior singles champion is Hilton G’s Matthew Fields, who beat his brother Timothy, also from Hilton G, in an excellent final.

The Westhoughton brothers produced fast, attacking table tennis. Tim won the first game 11-6, to which Matthew responded by winning the next three 11-6, 11-7 and 11-6.

Matthew won the Ralph Palmer Memorial Trophy for the most promising junior of the season. He is ranked number one in Lancashire and the North West at under-13s and number 12 in England at under-12s.

Timothy was awarded the Albert Howcroft Trophy for the most improved player of the season.

Barry Elliott won the veteran singles title with an 11-5, 7-11, 11-2, 11-5 victory over Mark Ramsbottom.

Derek Watmough, of Nomads A, retained the veteran over-60s competition, beating Heaton B’s John Scowcroft in the final.

Nigel Hallows teamed up with Ramsbottom’s Graham Young to win the handicapped doubles against Jake Shaw and Mark Ramsbottom 11-7, 11-7, 8-11, 11-13, 11-9.

Burning Desire’s Dave Smith and Lindsey Reynolds are mixed doubles champions after beating Paul Cicchelli and Jean Smart of Hilton H.

Hilton Tameside edged out Ramsbottom A 5-4 to win the Warburton Cup. Receiving two points start, Tameside won the first four games before Ramsbottom won four, and Shaw beat Mick Moir in four games in the final set to clinch victory.

Shaw and Phil Biggs both won two and Caroline Hallows one for Hilton while Mark Ramsbottom won two and Moir and Andy Jackson one.

Ramsbottom A won the Brian Gittins Cup with a 5-3 victory over Burning Desire A who had two points start. The match was close with only one set won in straight games. Reynolds was unbeaten while Moir and Jackson each won two and Ramsbottom one for the winners.

Coburg won the George Yates Shield with a 6-3 win against fellow Third Division side Hilton G. Played from scratch, Coburg’s Jimmy Hewitt and Bob Bent trebled, while Brian Young, and Tim and Matthew Fields won one each.

Farnworth SC C won the Ron Hindle Memorial Trophy with a 5-4 victory over Heaton G. Played off scratch, the match was even to 4-4 when Farmworth’s Ian Westmoreland completed his treble. Colin Roberts and Phil Beales each won two.

Robert Hall, who was unbeaten in Division Two for Hilton Tigers this season, received the Rupert De Riggs Plate for his outstanding help to junior players.

Graham Young of Ramsbottom C, trebled in their final match at Wingates, which they won 7-2, to see him finish Division One Top Ten winner.
