GAVIN McCann is desperate to put any lingering relegation fears to bed against his old club Aston Villa this afternoon.

The Wanderers midfielder reckons Gary Megson’s side would have been safe and sound by now, if they had registered the points their performances merited.

But with one more victory needed to ensure their place in the Premier League next season, McCann does not mind how they accomplish their goal at the Reebok – just as long as they get over the line.

“I think we should have a few more points on the board,” he said. “Looking at the league table and some of the results we have had, we’ve done well in matches and not got the result we deserved.

“We need to get into a habit of nicking points when we aren’t playing too well. An example was at Portsmouth where we should have nicked a point.

“We’ve had some good performances, so we just need to carry on going in the last five games.”

Recent meetings between Wanderers and Villa have brought about plenty of goals, although the Whites have earned just one victory in their last 11 meetings.

A 4-2 defeat at Villa Park earlier this season could have been much worse, given the home side’s rampant mood.

“They are always decent games between the two teams but we’ll have to be careful because Villa have some good players,” McCann added.

“They are up there in the league and they will need to win to keep pushing because recently they have had some tough games.”
