10 YEARS AGO From the Evening News April 27, 1999 WORK has started to demolish one of Bolton’s oldest schools and build an innovative health and community centre in its place.

The new primary care resource centre, on the site of Pikes Lane School, off Deane Road, secured the final piece of funding from the NHS Executive, allowing the £3 million development to go ahead.

As already reported, the scheme has been beset with problems. And a wrangle over land threatened the funding.

25 YEARS AGO From the Evening News April 27, 1984 YOUTHS looking for glue may have started a blaze which caused thousands of pounds of damage at a builders’ workshop.

The fire at building contractor J. Prince Limited in Vale Street, on the Radcliffe-Bolton border, was discovered shortly after 1.0 a.m. today. Surveying the badly damaged remains of his premises today, owner Mr James Prince said: “It looks as though it was kids who did this.

“They were looking for glue and when they did not find any they started the fires and caused the damage.

“In the past we have had break-ins by youths looking for glue but they have always just searched and left.”

50 YEARS AGO From the Evening News April 27, 1959 AN unemployed labourer (27) and another unemployed man (28), were sent to prison for three years at Bolton Quarter Sessions to-day.

They had pleaded not guilty to a charge of breaking into Burnden Park on Jan. 12th and stealing four bottles of beer valued at 3s. 6d. from a balcony bar.

100 YEARS AGO From the Evening News April 27, 1909 AN audience of 400 men assembled on Sunday at the monthly sacred concert of St. Peter and Paul’s Holy Family men.

The orchestra belonging to the Confraternity gave a number of selections, under the conductorship of Mr. C. J. Hampson. A concert solo by Mr. A. Y. Taylor accompanied by the orchestra was thoroughly enjoyed. Mr. A. C. Busby contributed two songs for which he was loudly applauded.
