IF there is a fire engine outside your house it does not necessarily mean there is a crisis.
A leaflet came through our door from the Greater Manchester Fire Service recently following a fatal house fire in the neighbourhood.
We accepted the offer of a free household check and an operational crew — available to be diverted to an emergency call throughout the visit— gave us some sensible advice and fitted an extra smoke alarm.
These firemen were pleasant, helpful and great with five-year-old Lucy when they gave her the chance to sit in the fire engine parked outside.
Preventative exercises like this are an intelligent use of time and resources — and very good public relations.
