JLLOYD Samuel refuses to believe Wanderers are completely safe from relegation despite having earned a battling draw against his former club Aston Villa.

The Whites took their first point from a top six side all season thanks to Tamir Cohen’s second-half strike, temporarily putting seven points between themselves and the bottom three.

The result also means they have now bettered last season’s points haul of 37, but Samuel still thinks there is plenty of work to be done in the final four games.

“It’s isn’t over yet,” he said. “Progress will be measured in league position at the end, so we need to move on and take as many points as we can in the last four games.

“We can’t rest on our laurels because otherwise it will be a tough run-in.

“Anything can happen yet and at this stage of the season, you can get freak results. Teams win at places where you wouldn’t give them a chance.

“But we have got to look at ourselves and make sure we get our job done.”

Samuel put in an impressive performance against the Midlanders, with whom he spent nine seasons before signing at the Reebok.

Yet it looked as if his efforts were going to be in vain when Ashley Young gave the visitors a lucky lead in a dreadful first half with a cross that nestled inside the far post.

“It was a well-earned point in the end,” the full-back said. “I didn’t think we deserved to be 1-0 down. We were on the front foot and going okay when they scored.

“It was another freakish goal to concede, so we have done well to get back into the game.”

Wanderers emerged sprightlier in the second half to equalise before the game reverted to type, with both sides incapable of forcing another advantage.

“It’s that stage of the season,” Samuel conceded. “I think the number of games are catching up on them and to an extent, us. It’s more about keeping yourself going mentally now.

“At half-time the gaffer just said ‘keep plugging away’ because we didn’t think Aston Villa were that much in it in many respects.

“So the goal was more of a relief than anything,” he said.

“It’s good for Tamir because he hasn’t had many games this season.”
