COMMUNITY spirited neighbours prevented a fire from gutting a house after the occupants had gone out.

They smelt burning coming from the house in Aldercroft Avenue, Breightmet, at 11.30am yesterday.

They called the fire service and managed to get into the house and remove a pan which had been left unattended on the cooker.

Graham Banks, watch commander at Bolton Central fire station, said: “The neighbours did a good job and prevented any major fire damage, although the house was smoke-logged.”

He added: “The smoke alarms inside did not go off despite the amount of smoke, so I would urge people to check their smoke alarms regularly.”

Crews were at the scene for 20 minutes.
