LITTLE Lever striker Ben Wells continued his recent prolific form in front of goal as he signed off for the season in style in the Lnacashire Amateur League.

He scored direct from a corner in a 1-1 draw at Bury GSOB before beginning a 21-day ban by missing last night’s Myles Kenyon Cup Final at Gigg Lane.

A red card in a recent game against Old Boltonians will also rule the Lever goal machine out of Saturday’s LAL Cup semi-final at Old Mancunians and, if they get there, the final at the County Ground, Leyland.

“He’s gutted to miss the cup final at Gigg Lane,” said Little Lever manager Phil Hardman. “It couldn’t have come at a worse time because there’s the chance of another cup final as well. And we’re going to miss him because he’s a really good striker and he’s been in great form for us.”

Old Bolts clinched runners-up spot when they drew 1-1 at home to Radcliffe Town and were helped by fourth-bottom Horwich RMI denying Rossendale Amateurs the chance to finish second with an impressive 2-1 victory.

Matt McLellan got the goal for Old Bolts who travel to champions Old Blackburnians tomorrow night for the semi-final of the LAL Cup, 6.30pm kick off, and host the same team in a last-day clash of the top two on Saturday.

Old Blackburnians go into tomorrow night’s match with a victory under their belts against another Bolton side, Wyresdale, on Saturday.

The prolific Gaz Whiteside, who scored 27 goals in last season’s successful promotion campaign, smashed in his 21st of this season with a 25-yard free kick which flew into the top corner. It was Wyresdale’s third game in six days, all of which have seen them able to turn out a bare 11 players due to injuries and unavailability.

“It’s been a tough week for us,” said manager Aamar Ahmed. “We won 1-0 at Rochdale St Clements on Monday, lost 3-2 to Little Lever on Wednesday and lost 2-1 at Old Blackburnians on Saturday with a scratch team.

“We’ve only just been able to field a team for all those games and had to put in some players from the reserves.

“But they’ve done well considering the circumstances and we’re pleased with our first season in the Premier League. It looks like we’re going to finish sixth from bottom, maybe fifth, which isn’t too bad.”

Horwich gained revenge for a 1-0 defeat at Rossendale last Wednesday by beating them at home three days later.

Goals from David Birtwistle and Adam Shinners were enough to take the prized Rossendale scalp for the young local side who will finish fourth or fifth bottom.

Horwich play their last game at their Eccles ground, which has been their home since they formed 12 years ago, a week on Saturday against Old Mancunians before moving to impressive new facilities in Horwich next season.

Bolton Lads Club are planning ahead for next season in the First Division, after six years in the Premier, after finishing in the second relegation spot.

They were well beaten 5-0 at Old Mancunians on Saturday, conceding four goals in the first half.

“We didn’t play that badly,” said joint manager Danny Kay.

“We played some neat stuff right through the game and had four or five chances of our own in the first half which we didn’t take while they took theirs.”
