ANDY O’Brien has tipped Gary Cahill to go to the very top – if he believes in himself.

Defender Cahill has been outstanding this season and has been on the verge of an England call-up.

Still only 23, the former Aston Villa player continues to improve with every game and is sure to attract interest from potential suitors over the summer.

O’Brien is convinced his team-mate is already the best young centre-half in the country – but insists the modest Cahill must have more faith in his own ability.

“It’s only onwards and upwards for him and the club,” said O’Brien.

“Physically, he has got great presence, he’s good in the air and, although I might be a bit biased, of all the young centre halves in England, he’s definitely the best.

“All he has got to do is continue doing what he is doing. His confidence is rising and all he needs is telling how good he is.

“Gary is not a big-headed lad and he deserves the credit he is getting because he is doing fantastically.”

O’Brien saw one of Cahill’s international rivals at first hand in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Aston Villa.

Curtis Davies is among a clutch of young English centre backs, including the likes of Middlesbrough’s David Wheater and Manchester City’s Micah Richards, hoping to attract the attentions of national boss Fabio Capello.

But O’Brien feels Cahill is at the top of that list.

“What will happen to him, or where he will go, only the gods can say,” said the former Republic of Ireland international.

“I can only judge him on whether he will play at international level and, for me, with the players he has around him in that age bracket, he is the best of the bunch.”

O’Brien, meanwhile, was forced off with cramp at the weekend but will be available for Saturday’s trip to Wigan.
