A MUM, whose daughter was born with a rare, inherited condition, is hoping that a fundraising evening at Our Lady of Lourdes Club in Farnworth will bring the illness to local people’s attention.

Lena Griffin had never heard of Phenylketonuria when her second daughter Katie Louise was diagnosed with it at 10 days old.

The genetic condition means that the liver cannot break down proteins and, untreated, can lead to brain damage.

A heel prick test carried out on all new-borns identifies the problem, which affects one in 15,000 people, and means they have to have regular blood monitoring and a restricted diet.

Katie Louise, of Brierfield Road, Farnworth is now six months old and Mrs Griffin is hoping to raise funds for the National Society of Phenylketonuria by organising a cabaret evening and disco at the Plodder Lane club on Saturday.

Singer Joanne Hindley and entertainer Donna Elson are on the bill and there will also be a disco and potato pie supper at the adults-only event.

Tickets costing £7, are available from Our Lady of Lourdes Club.
