HE has an Olympic gold medal and a world record to his name — but now Bolton cycling star Jason Kenny has an honour closer to home.

For the Farnworth lad has had a room named after him at his local social club.

Our Lady of Lourdes Club, in Plodder Lane, decided to honour “their Jason” by dedicating the refurbished suite to the Olympic gold and silver medalist.

Father Ged Murphy, who unveiled the plaque in honour of Jason, at a ceremony on Saturday night, said: “He’s done Bolton proud, he’s done Farnworth proud and he’s done Our Lady of Lourdes proud. This is our way of saying well done and thank you. We also want to embarrass him a bit. He’s such a modest lad but we want him to know how well he has done.”

Jason, who went to Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School and Mount St Joseph’s Secondary School, was at the ceremony.

He said: “I used to go to the club quite a bit when I was younger and I still pop in every now and then. It was Father Ged who told me about the plan — obviously I was really pleased. I enjoy a game of snooker and there are tables at the club, so I will try to get down there when I can. I have also been made a life member which is great.”

Last year, Jason capped off a year of success with an MBE in the New Year Honours list.

The gold medal-winning cyclist was rewarded for his services to sport in a list which was dominated by the British Olympic and Paralympic athletes.

Jason’s gold in the team sprint event and silver in the individual sprint in Beijing helped propel Team GB to fourth place in the Olympic medal table, the country’s best performance for more than 100 years.
