What or who encouraged you to choose teaching as a career? I always wanted to be a teacher from being very young. I loved primary school, especially the upper juniors. There was a great sense of belonging and fun at Acres Hill where I went as a child, as well as good structures and discipline, so I had very happy days at school and I think that was the main influence on the career choice I made.

What has been your most satisfying moment in the classroom? Many satisfying moments but one which really sticks in my mind was when teaching percentages to a Year Six class, one child in particular was really struggling but after a while she understood and shouted “Miss! Miss! I get it now”—- the look of delight on her face was priceless.

What are you looking forward to this year? Lots of things, having another baby (due very soon) then returning to school to see all the children again, looking much taller and with new haircuts!

What do you enjoy about teaching? Many things! Being able to make a difference to the lives of the children, helping them to develop skills, knowledge and understanding that will help them in the future. Working with children is great fun —when you really get to know the children as individuals you get to know their sense of humour and what makes them tick, which really helps to develop the rapport that you need to motivate them and help them to learn.
