Totally Saturday (Saturday, BBC One, 7.30pm) Now that we all know going out and having fun is bad for us, we’ve gotten used to staying in and being bored instead.

But, thanks to Graham Norton and some unexpectedly creative minds at the BBC, there might just be something worth watching on the box of a Saturday evening over the next few weeks.

Tonight, the funnyman brings viewers another helping of live entertainment, featuring an hour of high-energy unpredictable excitement, and special guests, for the entire family.

Totally Saturday turns the tables on members of the audience as it gets hold of their possessions and puts them centre stage — no-one is safe and anybody’s life could be laid bare in front of millions.

The Hamster Run returns, giving an audience member the chance to race as fast as they can in a life-sized hamster wheel to win cash prizes.

Smallville (Sunday, Channel 4, 2.45pm) There have been many battles between good and evil over the years, but has there ever been one as bitter and convoluted as the feud between Clark Kent and Lex Luthor?

In this gripping fantasy series they have gone head to head time and again, and it has been a lesson in how to construct multi-layered characters with compelling stories.

Not bad for a series that started out as a fun little fantasy based on the Man of Steel’s adolescence.

There’s no doubt this series has been the most gripping of all, and has been building towards a climax and snowballing the excitement levels since day one.

In a gripping series finale, Lex goes to the Fortress to fulfil his destiny by defeating Clark, whom he suspects of conspiring to destroy the human race.

Make sure you pay a visit to the bathroom before it starts. You won’t want to miss a second of this stunning climax.

Dispatches: Afghanistan’s Dirty War (Monday, Channel 4, 8pm) Following the deaths of civilians in US airstrikes on the Farah province of Afghanistan last month, this week’s programme explores the effect these operations are having on US-Afghan relations.

Directed by Emmy and Bafta award-winning filmmaker Tom Roberts, Dispatches investigates a similar American assault on the village of Azizabad last year in which many civilians, including dozens of women and children, were killed.

The film examines the reaction of the US forces and looks at how the US army remains robust in denying any wrongdoing.

The camera crew travel to Azizabad, a village in Western Afghanistan to investigate what really happened on August 22 last year.

The programme features moving personal testimonies from the survivors.
