THE future of Edgworth’s red telephone box is a defining issue for modern times.

Mobile phones and other clever communication devices have killed off the need for these iconic structures.

BT says the one in Bolton Road that has been there for more than 50 years has not been used for at least 12 months and costs too much to maintain.

Not surprisingly, it wants to get shut and is offering it to North Turton Parish Council for £1.

Councillors are understandably cautious about the costs and liabilities they would be taking on and have deferred a decision until they get more information.

That is wise, but there will be many villagers with a sense of tradition who will hope for a positive approach.

After all, about 350 kiosks have been adopted by parish councils across the country and it must be possible for North Turton to get feedback from some of those who are further along this particular road.

Some have been transformed in to miniature art galleries, local information booths or meeting points.

Worries expressed by some councillors that this box will simply be used by young people for smoking and urination purposes are relevant.

But I should think it is possible to secure the door if it is decided that this kiosk should become some sort of artwork.

Villagers need to tell North Turton Council what they think.

They should press button “1” on their keypads for keeping it in some positive way and button “2” for putting it on the historical scrap heap.
