BOXING: Reza Ali and Osman Aslam were celebrating after being crowned national junior champions.

The Bolton duo were in top form at the ABA Junior Novice Championship in Liverpool on Saturday.

Castle Hill’s Ali, aged 16, won his 57kg showdown after his opponent was disqualified in the second round.

And Aslam made it a double celebration for the town when the 15-year-old claimed the 46kg title on points.

But Aslam’s Gloves club-mate, John Cartwright, could not make it a hat-trick of victories when he lost his bout. Local fighters suffered mixed fortunes as the Senior Novice Championships got underway in Manchester on Sunday.

Anthony Grimshaw (Rumworth & Hulton) was the only success in the under-10 fight category, but there was disappointment for Liam Robowtham (Positive Impact), Bilal Shah (Gloves), Michael Grayson (Leigh), Daniel Corbett and Callum Morris (both Pool of Life).

There was better news in the under-20 class, where Castle Hill twins Chris and Simon Jenkinson both won, the former overcoming Bolton Lads Club rival Kyle Hill.

The duo return to action at Cedar Mount High School sports hall on Sunday when they take on Steven Whittaker (Bredbury) and Callum Cooke (Northside) respectively. Two Bolton lads, Monsoor Din (Gloves) and Ryan Kay (Rumworth & Hulton), go head to head on the same bill.

A day earlier, Simon Golding (Gloves) and Shadaab Akbar (Bolton Lads) will be in action, while Grimshaw reward for winning at the weekend is an all-Bolton clash with Ben Broadhurst (Castle Hill).
