ROGUE traders are targeting Bolton homes and trying to cash in on the digital switchover.

Trading standards officers are warning that unscrupulous contractors are trying to exploit consumers by carrying out unnecessary work.

Officers are aware of cases — including one in Farnworth — where residents have been advised that if they do not have their aerials replaced they will lose reception. But it is estimated that only three per cent of households in the region will need a new aerial to receive TV after the switchover.

Anyone who receives an unannounced knock on the door saying that they need a new aerial should ask the person to leave and report the person at once to Trading Standards. And Bolton Council is advising residents not to allow anyone in their house who says they are there to sort out the TV — and beware of any phone calls asking for personal details such as name, address and especially bank details.

Cllr Nick Peel, executive member for Housing, Neighbourhoods and Regulations, said: “There is no such thing as a digital aerial and we would caution all residents not to be talked into buying a new ‘digital’ one, as they do not need it.

“We’d urge residents not to buy anything from someone who knocks on the door and if you suspect anyone of being a rogue trader, report them to our trading standards team on 08454 040506.”
