THE fight to get extra carriages on Bolton’s overcrowded trains will be taken to Parliament after talks by MPs.

The Government attracted widespread criticism when it slashed by half proposals to provide more than 180 additional carriages for Northern Rail services by 2014.

Campaigners say the company, which runs Bolton’s local train services, needs extra carriages to reduce overcrowding.

Passenger numbers across Greater Manchester have grown by 50 per cent in the past 10 years, meaning standing room only on most peak time trains.

Lobbying by passengers has now led to the Government launching a review, and MPs across Greater Manchester have met in Whitehall to discuss the problem .

Cllr Keith Whitmore, chairman of the Greater Manchester Integrated Transport Authority, said: “We are pleased with the help of our MPs on this and I trust they will now be seeking further talks with the secretary of state.

“We need some definitive answers on the number of carriages we will be getting and the timescales for their delivery.”
