ACTRESS Sally Lindsay has revealed how she begged comedian Peter Kay not to wear the goofy false teeth that he sported during his Coronation Street cameo.

Sally, who played barmaid Shelley Unwin on the show, said: “I said: ‘Don’t put them in, it’s ridiculous’.

“And he was, like: ‘I’m putting ’em in, I’m putting ’em in’. So we had a row about that, but he won, obviously.”

Sally’s reminiscences will make up part of a special programme, Stars on the Street, which will be shown at 8pm on Saturday, December 19.

Peter appeared in 2004, playing the role of Eric, Shelley’s geeky childhood friend, who was hoping to win her affections with a romantic dinner date.

Wendi Peters, who played Cilla Battersby-Brown, said: “We were all thrilled when we heard Peter Kay was coming in because he is like the Northern hero. We all love Peter Kay.”

Hollywood actor Sir Ian McKellen will also be celebrated.

The former Bolton School pupil and star of Lord of the Rings appeared in 10 episodes of the soap, playing Mel Hutchwright, an author with an eye for the ladies who romanced Audrey Roberts.

Sue Nicholls, who plays Audrey, said: “Sir Ian McKellen is a total, total love, I’m sorry to have to say. He knows it, I told him.

“Actually, he was supposed to be a bit naughty and a bit of a conman, but actually it was wonderful. I fell deeply in love with Sir Ian McKellen — much good will that do me.”

The show features the scenes where Sir Ian’s character tries to seduce Audrey in the Rovers and ruffles feathers at the book club when he refers to Ken Barlow as Kev.
