AN arson attack which led to the deaths of an elderly woman and her granddaughter is to feature on Crimewatch.

Officers leading the double murder inquiry hope the publicity will help them catch the people responsible.

The incident happened in Little Holme Walk, Great Lever, in June, 2008.

Alana Mian was just four years old when she suffered horrific burns from which she later died. Her grandmother, Hameeda Begum, aged 71, also perished in the blaze.

It is believed the fire started when a burning wheelie bin was pushed up against the front door of the house.

Mrs Begum’s husband, Mumtaz Chishty, discovered the blaze and dashed out of the house to get help.

By the time he returned, the heat was so intense he could not get back in.

Despite a series of appeals, no one has been charged, and Mr Chishty is now hoping a reconstruction of the incident, expected to be televised in January, will help catch the killers.

The 72-year-old, who has already been interviewed for the programme, said: “I am still hoping that somebody can come forward and tell Crimewatch or the police. They didn’t just kill my wife and granddaughter that day. They killed me too.”

Firefighter Steve Morris, aged 39, suffered horrific burns in the incident and has since received bravery awards for his actions on the night of the fire.

He, too, has been interviewed, while firefighters from Green Watch, who fought the blaze, will appear in the reconstruction.

Scenes have been shot in Little Holme Walk and at fire service training centres.Police hope the graphic reconstruction will encourage witnesses or anyone with information to come forward. Alana’s mum, Saima Mian, suffered 13 per cent burns and has since returned home to Australia with her husband, Fahad.
