MORE than 1,000 Muslims turned out in force yesterday to celebrate the birthday of the prophet Mohammed.
Men and boys paraded through the streets of Bolton, singing and carrying banners and flags.
Many people travelled for miles to take part, with visitors from as far as Birmingham, London, Glasgow and Cardiff.
They set off from Makka Mosque Culture and Community Centre, in Grecian Crescent, and walked around Great Lever for about an hour.
The procession headed back to the mosque for refreshments and presentations about Islam.
Organiser Tassadaq Hussain said: “This is probably the most important day for Muslims because it celebrates when the prophet Mohammed came to earth. It has been a wonderful day and fortunately the weather has been fine. More people turned up than we expected. It is nice to have so many people here.”
He also thanked police for their help during the procession.
