THEY set off to The Gambia as teenagers with little idea of the hardship faced by children of a similar age in Africa.

And when the group of sixth formers from Rivington and Blackrod High returned, they were changed people.

The youngsters took part in the event, arranged by the school for the 20th consecutive year, to experience life away from the luxury to which they have become accustomed.

They spent time in schools in the village of Tendaba, helping to develop a library started on previous visits. They also visited Sukuta Maternity Unit and donated baby clothes and toys.

The pupils stayed with a local family, saw how basic the maternity unit at a hospital was and how basic education was not a given right. And the students admitted what they saw moved them to tears.

Samantha Broxton, aged 17, said: “It makes me so angry when some children do not appreciate the education they have.

“We really want to give them a good shake.”

Amy Waddington, aged 17, added: “The trip really made us value our education.”

Teenagers did not just come back with a new found appreciation for what they have, but also a sense of pride and happiness which they say learned from the local people.

Joe Hadley, aged 18, said: “They have respect for human beings, here people are so miserable despite the possessions they have.”

Hayley Fraser, aged 17, said: “Everyone says hi to each other, over here you would be looked at if you said hello to a stranger.”

Young people say they are more globally aware and say their families have noticed a difference in their attitudes.

The group of 22 students are planning to go back to the country together in the future.

Alex Marr, aged 16, said: “A trip like this is an important experience for young people.

“I have been to places like Botswana as a tourist but this experience is different as you get a deeper insight into the way people live.”

Co-ordinator of the trip Phil Walmsley said: “It is a life changing experience for the young people.”

On March 28 a Grand Gambian Students Reunion will take place for students who have been on the trip over the past 20 years. The cost is £20 per person.
