A FIRM of solicitors has urged people to remember the Bolton Lads and Girls Club in their will.

The club, which provides state-of-the-art sporting and creative activities to around 2,500 children in the Bolton area, needs £1.5 million a year to keep running.

At the moment, only a fraction of its income comes from legacies, whereas many other charities, such as the RSPCA, derive up to two-thirds of their funding through donations made in wills.

Founding patrons, KBL Solicitors on Mawdsley Street, are aiming to remedy the situation by encouraging people to make a legacy in favour of the club.

Tax and wills expert Susan Hartley said: "Many people would like to give more to charity while they are alive but find it difficult because their money is tied up in property or possessions.

"A legacy is an excellent way for people to give a donation to a charity such as the club when the value of their estate has been released.

"It is the most tax-efficient way of making a donation as it is free from inheritance tax and reduces the amount of duty paid on your estate."
