FIREFIGHTERS spent more than two hours tackling a blaze at a doctors surgery.

The fire broke out at the Halliwell surgery on Lindfield Drive in Halliwell, when a faulty bathroom extractor fan burst into flames.

Fire crews were called at 9.30pm on Sunday night following reports of smoke billowing from the eaves of the GPs surgery.

After breaking into the building, which had metal security shutters, fire fighters managed to contain the blaze.

Fire chief sub officer Graham Banks said: "A plastic extractor fan seems to have been faulty and caught on fire, which in turn set the roof on fire.

"We had no way of knowing how bad the fire was until we got into the building because obviously it had been locked up since Friday.

"The damage is not extensive, but the nine rooms on the ground floor are badly smoke damaged."

Despite the smoke damage to the building, the surgery opened and was seeing patients as normal on Monday.
