CAMPAIGNERS are one step closer to getting a speed camera on a Radcliffe road which claimed the life of a local teenager.

Bury Council has submitted an application for a speed camera on Bolton Road after a traffic survey.

The news was hailed today by the parents of 15-year-old Natalie Pickwick-Jones as a victory. They have led a year-long battle to get a camera installed.

Natalie, a Radcliffe High School pupil, died in February last year after being struck by a car as she crossed Bolton Road with a friend, near the junction with Canute Street.

Her father, David Jones, said: "We're relieved that after fighting for so long we've finally made some progress, but it's just a shame that something like Natalie's death had to happen for people to take notice."

Mr Jones and Natalies mother, Elaine Pickwick, of Olsberg Close, Radcliffe, launched the bid to get the camera installed in the wake of their daughters death.

Bury Councils application for the speed camera will now have to go before the Greater Manchester Safety Camera Partnership which will make a final decision on the proposal.
