THE final traditional transfer deadline day for Football League clubs proved a busy one for the Shakers, who made two loan signings at the end of it.

Manager Graham Barrow has swooped to bring in Oldham Athletic midfielder Danny Boshell and Bolton Wanderers youngster Ricky Shakes, to the end of the season.

Boshell, a 23-year-old Bradford-born player is his club's longest-serving performer and has been connected with the Latics since he was nine-years-old.

He worked his way through their academy system to reach the first team and has made 20 appearances so far this term before falling out of favour with former boss Brian Talbot.

According to Bury assistant manager Kelham O'Hanlon, Boshell will do a good job for the Shakers and his capture is something of a coup.

"The kind of players we can afford to bring in, working to the perameters we are set, are lads from Premiership sides who have no experience of playing in the League," he said.

"But Danny knows what this level of football is all about and played more than 20 games for Oldham last season.

"We know he can perform at this level, and higher as well, and he's a real asset to the squad, we are quite lucky to get him.

"He likes to get on the ball and play and will allow us to move the likes of Simon Whaley and Lee Unsworth into other positions.

"When you only have 14 or 15 players the squad needs to be adaptable."

Brixton-born Shakes is a speedy 20-year-old striker who has been on loan at Bristol Rovers in the past few weeks.

He signed for Bolton in 2001 and made a scoring debut in the FA Cup defeat to Tranmere in January 2004.

He will provide much-needed cover for the forward positions in the final games of the season and has also played on the right side of midfield and defence.

Overall, it proved to be a frustrating week for Barrow whose severe financial limitations scuppered moves for two of his earlier targets.

He had spoken to former Stockport full-back Danny Adams and Chesterfield's left-sided utility man Mark Innes with a view to coming to Gigg on loan.

But although initially interested, both opted for moves to League One sides Huddersfield Town and Port Vale respectively.

Meanwhile, an attempt to bring a striking reinforcement in, in the shape of Bradford City's big forward Michael Symes fell by the wayside after he broke down injured in training earlier in the week.

"It is a hard job picking up experienced players like this at the best of times but when finances are tight it is almost impossible," he said.

"Clubs are loathe to let players go and with no money it is doubly difficult.

"Both Huddersfield and Port Vale were able to dangle the carrot of a contract for next season in front of Danny and Mark.

"That's a luxury I'm not able to afford at this moment in time."

Adams was believed to be offered the same money by struggling Nationwide Conference side Northwich Victoria as the Shakers were offering, which gives a clear indication of the weight the club are currently punching at.

Predictably, none of the club's younger players have been allowed to join non-league clubs as they have in the past.
