HIGHWAY bosses will unveil a third bid to make a notorious accident blackspot safe.

They plan to introduce safety measures in Belmont Road, Bolton, which has been the scene of a number of serious accidents in recent years.

The proposals are aimed at reducing the speed of vehicles and increasing pedestrian safety.

Traffic islands will be provided to help people cross the road, and the width of the carriageway could be reduced by a number of parking lay-bys or hatched areas.

Lanes may also be added for motorists turning right on the road.

Bolton Councils highway department is also proposing to install traffic lights at the junction of Bar Lane and Belmont Road.

Previous attempts to introduce traffic calming on the road have been opposed by residents, who said the measures reduced parking in the area.

A crossing will also be provided to help children cross to High Lawn primary school from the Oldhams estate, when Oldhams CP School closes.

The plans have been drawn up after extensive consultation with more than 1,800 residents.

They will give the findings on the plans at a public meeting with councillors and engineering staff to be held tonight at High Lawn school, in Sweetloves Lane.

Traffic management group engineer Terry Bullock said: "Residents identified their concerns along Belmont Road, especially slowing down traffic and increasing pedestrian safety.

"With these proposals, we aim to tackle these issues and provide safety for new pupils who will travel to High Lawn from the other side of Belmont Road."

Residents comments on the scheme will be considered, and adjustments made before the plans are presented to Cllr David Wilkinson, Bolton Council's executive member for environment and housing strategy.

The meeting will take place tonight at 7pm and the plans will be on display from 6pm.
