Clubs: Left Wanderers in1980 to join Sunderland for £150,000. Made 214 first class appearances for the Black Cats. Following that he played for Millwall, Tampa Bay Rowdies, Coventry City and Huddersfield Town before returning to Wanderers in 1985. Spent one season at Burnden Park making 17 appearances before joining Preston North End and then West Brom.

Management: Was caretaker manager at Preston and held a key position at Sunderland before becoming manager of Limerick in the Republic of Ireland. Appointed manager of Blackpool in 1994, where he led the Tangerines to the 1996 Second Division play-offs. Moved to Notts County in 1997 guiding them to the 1998 Third Division Championship.

Took charge of Wanderers in October 1999 succeeding Colin Todd and in his first season took the club to the semi-finals of the FA Cup, League Cup and First Division play-offs. In 2001 he steered them to a First Division play-off victory over Preston North End in Cardiff and last season became the first manager in 33 years to keep Wanderers in the top division of English football.
