GRAHAM Taylor was upset with the decision that cost his side dearly at the Reebok.

He saw a second half effort from Juan Pablo Angel that would have levelled the scores wiped out after a controversial offside decision.

But Taylor's anger was not directed at the referee but at the assistant referee, who flagged for the incident.

"I thought Angel looked on-side but it doesn't really matter what I saw because the assistant referee saw it differently.

"Earlier in the season we were told that if there was any doubt with offside decisions, the attacker would be given the benefit but that wasn't the case in this instance.

"I haven't seen a replay but if it looks as if he is offside then I'll be the first to say the assistant referee was right and I was wrong."

Taylor. however, went on to say that although referees have progressed in recent years, that is not the case with their assistants.

"I feel we have some good referees and I make no bones about that but I'm not so sure we have that many good assistant referees. Unfortunately they are letting their colleagues down.

"If a flag goes up the referee has to take notice of that. In this case the flag has gone up and the referee has had to disallow the goal.

"But overall I think assistant referees are more of a problem than the referees."

Despite that, Taylor had no complaints about the 55th minute penalty scored by Michael Ricketts that earned Wanderers the winning points.

"Once again I haven't seen a replay but if the keeper has made contact with the player then it looks a penalty.

"In a situation like that when an attacker moves in on the keeper, if there is contact, then he is going to go down and it is very difficult not to give it.

"What concerns me is that Pedersen has come across from the other side of the pitch but none of my players have tracked him.

"Nobody's attention has been drawn to the fact that this player is making a run behind the defence. It's that which disappoints me."

Of the match itself Taylor told his players that Wanderers, still looking for their first win, would fight for every ball but was disappointed when they did not heed the warning.

"I thought the first half was pretty even but in the second Bolton were much more direct. They started to turn us round and Ricketts started to battle it out and disturb our central defenders.

"My disappointment is that it was nothing that hadn't been told to the Aston Villa players. I said we wouldn't be allowed to stroll about with the ball as there would be competition all over the pitch for them but I don't think they took that on board at all.

"You have to start being competitive yourself but it was only when J Lloyd Samuel came on that we started playing like that. It was very disappointing.

"It's the worse we've played this season."
