Wanderers will attempt 'mission impossible' when they go for glory at Old Trafford tomorrow night writes Neil Bonnar

Sam Allardyce will send his players with tactics to frustrate Manchester United and capitalise on any chances which fall their way.

But he knows the chance of beating United twice in two seasons are wafer thin.

Wanderers are perfectly prepared for tomorrow night's clash with 10 days of rest and training geared to producing the goods while Allardyce hopes United's players' recent glut of games will leave them fatigued.

Summing up what victory at Old Trafford means to Wanderers fans he said: "If you can beat Manchester United you make your fans happy for the rest of the season."

But he admitted: "Before last season it had been 22 years since we last beat United so to beat them twice in two years is almost impossible."

Wanderers aim to achieve the impossible by playing to United's weaknesses - and there are not many - and Allardyce believes the main one is a difficulty in breaking down defences.

"I think Alex might be a bit worried about teams putting up resistance like Middlesbrough did," he said hopefully.

"I saw that game and United struggled to break them down. We want to be as resilient as Middlesbrough and hopefully turn our attacks into goals."

Allardyce says it will be a sign of their success if they can quieten United's 64,000 fans.

"As good as their fans are, if you can frustrate United the fans can get on their backs and that is what we'll be trying to do.

"The beauty is there is no pressure on us because we are not expected to get anything from the game which makes it easier for our players to give their best. They did it last year and hopefully they can do it again."

Allardyce also hopes the vastly different preparations the two teams have had for the game could work in Wanderers' favour.

"We have not had a game for 10 days while some of United's players will have played four games in that time with Europe, the league and internationals," he added.

"The top players are having to play a lot more this season because clubs are picking their best 11 every game this season unlike last season when they were rotating.

"We hope there could be some fatigue in their camp and we can take advantage because we will be a lot fresher."
