BARCLAYCARD PREMIERSHIP

MANCHESTER UNITED v BOLTON WANDERERS

IVAN Campo, who completed his long awaited transfer from Real Madrid on transfer deadline day, was a surprise name on the subs' bench as Sam

Allardyce was forced into a defensive switch after Bruno N'Gotty was ruled out with a calf injury.

N'Gotty, who made his first big impression on Bolton fans with his performance in the famous 2-1 victory in the corresponding fixture last season, had been assigned the task of marking Ryan Giggs. In his absence that job went to Anthony Barness.

Campo, the 28-year-old Spanish international, was joined on the bench by Paul Warhurst, who recovered from the head injury that forced him out of the Reebok victory over Villa before half-time but missed out on the starting line-up. Promising teenage striker Jonathan Walters was rewarded for his early season performances in the reserves and junior teams with a place among the substitutes.

United's starting line-up was as expected. With Paul Scholes joining Roy Keane on the long-term casualty list, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer partnered Ruud van Nistelrooy in attack.

United: Barthez; Neville (P), Blanc, Ferdinand, Silvestre; Beckham, Butt, Veron, Giggs; van Nistelrooy, Solskjaer. Subs: Ricardo, Stewart, Forlan, O'Shea, Chadwick.

Wanderers: Jaaskelainen; Barness, Whitlow, Bergsson, Charlton; Gardner, Frandsen, Nolan, Djorkaeff, Pedersen, Ricketts. Subs: Warhurst, Walters, Campo, Holdsworth, Poole.

Referee: Graham Barber (Herts).

20:52: MANCHESTER UTD 0 WANDERERS 0

Half-time

HENRIK Pedersen squandered a glorious chance to put Wanderers in front in an exciting first half of the Old Trafford derby.

A clever Michael Ricketts backheel gave the Dane a head to head withn Fabien Barthez in the 28th minute - and the United keeper won it with a vital save.

Anthony Barness was unlucky moments later when he missed the target with a half-volley as Wanderers gave as good as they got.

Per Frandsen had an outstanding first half in midfield as Wanderers worked hard against Sir Alex Ferguson's Reds, who had their share of chances. Jussi Jaaskelainen pulled off a smart reflex save to tip over an Ole Gunnar Solskjaer header and Ruud van Nistelrooy hit the crossbar.

But there was little to choose between the teams at half-time.

KEVIN Nolan - one of the heroes of last season's memorable Old Trafford triumph - produced a repeat performance as Wanderers knocked United out of their Premiership stride yet again.

The 20-year-old midfielder, snubbed by the England Under 21s last week, rifled in a dream left footer just 13 minutes from time to decide a dramatic derby that had everything.

Wanderers had to withstand intense second half pressure as United tried to break the deadlock but they defended magnificently, giving little away in the way of clear scoring chances although Jussi Jaaskelainen joined the heroes' rosta with a magnificent double save from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's header then Mikael Silvestre's shot as the Reds looked certain to equalise.
