Wanderers

(4-4-2)

Jussi Jaaskelainen...7

An excellent all round display. One magnificent save, several decent ones and a safe pair of hands throughout.

Anthony Barness...7

Determined, tenacious in the tackle and willing to move forward in support. A big plus to the defence.

Gudni Bergsson...7

Done for the goal but never put a foot wrong either side of it. Just the man you want when the pressure is on.

Bruno N'Gotty...6

Did well alongside Bergsson but the recurring calf injury which forced him off at half time is a big worry.

Simon Charlton...7

Had his work cut out with the likes of Trevor Sinclair around but rose to the challenge as usual.

Kevin Nolan...7

Not the eye-catching performance he is known for but worked his socks off for the cause. A vital component.

Per Frandsen...8

Big, strong and class. Knows the job inside out and how to do it effectively for 90 minutes.

Jay Jay Okocha...8

His talent outshone the excellent Joe Cole. Skill, pace, fitness and a willingness to put himself about. He's got the lot.

Ricardo Gardner...7

Bags of energy and committment. There might not be much of him but he is just the man you need in the trenches.

Youri Djorkaeff...6

A rib injury which needed a pre-match injection took its toll and he could not produce his normal high standards.

Henrik Pedersen...7

Hard working, effective and desperate to cause problems. So unlucky with a great turn and shot against the post.

Subs: Mike Whitlow 8 (for N'Gotty, half time), Michael Ricketts 8 (for Djorkaeff, 55 mins), Kevin Poole, Delroy Facey, Stig Tofting.

Man of the match

MICHAEL RICKETTS

HE was only on for 37 minutes but he was the man everyone was talking about afterwards. Great goal, quality movement, superb workrate. No matter how well they played, Wanderers would have lost but for his short but sweet performance.

Magic Moment

WHAT else? This was Ricketts' day and his first goal from open play for 11 months was priceless as well as expertly taken. It won a point, cost West Ham two and will finally end all unhelpful talk of goal droughts.

Moan of the match

GLENN Roeder's verbal lashing of the officials for failing to rule out Wanderers' goal for offside when it turned out it was a perfectly good goal after all. It took the focus away from the credit Wanderers deserved.

Action shots

7 mins: Anthony Barness has to be strong to deny Jermain Defoe a clear header on goal. Good defending.

8 mins: Michael Carrick has Jaaskelainen at full stretch as he tries a crafty 20-yard lob, seconds later Ian Pearce volleys just wide as the Hammers pile on the early pressure.

GOAL

17 mins: Ian Pearce runs on to Jermain Defoe's flick and, in the clear, he cuts in on to his right foot and wins the one-on-one with Jussi Jaaskelainen with a powerful finish.

25 mins: Henrik Pedersen does superbly to twist and turn himself a yard of space under pressure and hit a shot wide of David James and against the post.

30 mins: Steve Lomas heads off target from a great position which is justice as he was well offside when the initial cross came in.

32 mins: It is offside but an encouraging moment as Per Frandsen hits a ferocious 25-yard drive which would have broken the net had David James not got in the way.

43 mins: Jay Jay Okocha's skill creates space to fire in a shot which takes a deflection and spins just wide with Upton Park holding its breath.

45 mins: Wanderers make all the running at the end of the half and Frandsen blasts wide before James has to make a smart save from the lively Pedersen's drilled cross to snuff out another dangerous moment.

Half time: West Ham 1

Wanderers 0

55 mins: Whitlow deflects a Defoe shot wide, seconds later Jaaskelainen gets his body in the way of a point blank shot and then gets down to smother a Defoe drive. West Ham gaining a foothold.

64 mins: Ricardo Gardner's mistake gives Trevor Sinclair a clear run in on goal but Gardner makes amends with a great saving tackle. From the corner Michael Carrick hits a thunderous drive which Jaaskelainen does superbly to parry to safety.

GOAL

65 mins: Michael Ricketts finally gets his goal from open play with a neat touch and poke past James from Okocha's inspired flick over the defence

84 mins: A great break and link-up by Okocha and Ricketts culminates in Okocha's shot being blocked by Dailly.

88 mins: Wanderers survive as they leave Sinclair alone six yards out and count their blessings as he heads wide with the goal gaping.

92 mins: A mesmerising run by Okocha takes him past three players but his shot is charged down.
