A VISIT to the doctor usually ends up with some sort of prescription.

But doctors in East Bolton can now not only prescribe the usual tablets or medicine . . . they can also prescribe a healthy lifestyle.

People who are overweight and unfit may now be referred by their family doctor to the Active Health Team, run by Bolton Council and East Bolton Regeneration.

The aim of the team is to tailor a plan to each individual over an eight-week period to make them a healthier person.

Lynn Owen, aged 56, from Breightmet, was referred to the team by the practice nurse at Dunstan Medical Centre, Bury New Road, because she was unfit and overweight.

She had also been diagnosed with Type Two diabetes in June last year and takes medication.

Asthma, chronic bronchitis and chronic obstructive pulminary disease also meant Lynn struggled with her breathing.

She started off with a structured exercise programme at Withins Community Leisure Centre, where she managed five minutes of exercise on the treadmill, bike and rower.

Now she visits the centre four times a week and takes part in regular two-mile walks.

The grandmother-of-five said: "At first, it is really hard.

"You feel exhausted because your body is not used to doing exercise but you soon start to feel better.

"After my first exercise session, I slept much better and have done so ever since.

"My breathing has improved and I have lost weight. "

Mrs Owen, a warden at Deepdale Road sheltered housing, decided she was not going it alone.

She took along a group of pensioners who have also seen improvements. She said: "It gets them out and about and they really enjoy it.

"I have one lady who is 79 coming. It keeps their minds active and the exercise makes them feel much better."

Cllr Martyn Cox, Bolton Council's executive member for culture, said: "This scheme is making a big difference to the lives of people taking part.

"The activity is tailored to the individual's needs, no matter what their age and ability, and shows that getting fit does not necessarily mean going to the gym but can include a whole range of activities.

"It is an excellent opportunity to participate in sport and lead a healthier lifestyle."

At present, the scheme is for residents in Breightmet, Tonge Fold, Tonge Moor, Hall i'th' Wood, Darcy Lever, The Haulgh and parts of Burnden.
