ASSOCIATION leaders Elton's hopes of winning the championship could be a little clearer after this weekend.

On Saturday they go to Edgworth but it is off the field when they could face their biggest battle.

Three weeks ago they beat Golborne to claim 20 points when most of the other games were washed out.

Yet it has been alleged that the game started after the 4pm deadline, and that could mean them having to lose 14 points.

The incident will be discussed at the Association's monthly meeting and the outcome will be eagerly awaited, not only by Elton, but by the clubs in the chasing pack.

The Bury side are currently 26 points clear of second placed Darcy Lever, but that will be whittled down to 12 if the decision goes against them tonight.

It is not surprising that Elton are preparing a vigorous defence and there has been an indication they may call on some legal help.

Association chairman John Charlson said: "We have heard that but all I can say is that it will be a fair hearing and Elton will have every chance to put their case."

Elton have never won the championship in their 10-year stay in the Association -- an omission they are keen to put right this year.

But equally determined are Darcy Lever, another side without a title win.

They face a tough game at Spring View on Saturday, while whoever comes out on top in the Walshaw-Standish game should go on to mount a meaningful title challenge.
