SAM Allardyce admitted today that he will make no decisions on trialists if it means damaging his chances of signing the "big guns" he has in his sights.

The Wanderers boss has been impressed with some of the players who have been training at the Reebok -- notably the former Real Madrid defender Julio Cesar, who was outstanding in Wednesday night's 2-0 victory over Dundee United.

He is understood to have been less impressed with former Manchester United midfielder Jordi Cruyff and the Brazilian midfilder, Emerson. But he has put all trialist matters on hold as he continues to work within his limited budget.

Without naming the trialists, Allardyce said: "We've had a few players in on trial and we haven't yet moved with any of them.

"I won't take what I consider a squad player rather than a player who would be a first team certainty because I want to save my budget for the four or five big boys that I need.

"Until those players are secured I won't be spending any more of my budget because I don't know how much any of these players are going to cost.

"We need to play the waiting game because I would be absolutely gutted if I had signed three of those players, whom I've had on trial, and then the right player I really wanted suddenly became available.

"I'm not going to spend any of my money on squad players until I actually get first team members into the team. The squad has been brought to a bare minimum to pave the way for a bigger and more talented squad for next season."

The latest trialist to turn up at the Reebook, Israeli international Tal Ben Haim, is expected to figure in Saturday's friendly at Radcliffe Borough, where Wanderers will have a squad of first teamers and reserves on duty.

The 22-year-old centre-back, who is out of contract at Maccabi Tel Aviv, has previously had trials with Aston Villa, Portsmouth and Blackburn.
