AN electrifying nine holes in 28 shots ensured a BGA Championship final spot for Steve Bryan at Hindley Hall on Tuesday night.

His 15-year-old opponent, Harry Proos, of Dunscar, could not live with the former professional, who eased home by five and four to set up a showdown with Old Links clubmate John Scholes.

Bryan, aged 31, was in unbelievable form as he took only three shots on each of the first eight holes and was unlucky to finish with a four on the ninth to make the turn in six under.

Proos pulled a hole back, but the damage was done, and there was to be no miracle rescue act for the teenage sensation.

The other semi-final was a much tighter affair and Scholes had to be at his best to edge out three times champion Billy Bromilow, of Chorley, by one hole.

Scholes admitted he has to face "the best player in Bolton" in the final.

"I played steady and didn't do anything silly and it was great having my dad, Albert, here supporting me. But Steve is a great player and he will take some beating.

"I am proud to be in the final and don't expect to win, but I hope I give him a game," said the Links champion, who has twice qualified but never before got past the quarter-finals.

Scholes, aged 36, added: "I know I can beat him but for that to happen then Steve has to be off his game and I have to be on top of mine. I will try my best."

Wednesday night's final gets under way at 5.15pm.
