BOLTON North-east MP Brian Iddon has thrown his weight behind a new campaign aimed at tackling underage sales of tobacco, alcohol and fireworks.

He has called on shopkeepers to sign up to the No ID, No Sale scheme, which offers support to retailers to ensure they do not break the law.

Dr Iddon said: "We want to create a culture of expectation at the point-of-sale that proof of age should either be offered or produced on demand and that this should be the norm for all age-restricted sales."

In a recent nationwide survey, 96 per cent of shopkeepers said they had been approached by people under 16 wanting to buy cigarettes.

It also found that 84 per cent claimed to have suffered abuse when refusing sales.
