Bolton Sports Federation Tennis

SOUTH College A marked their firm intentions with a 9-0 thrashing of the Premier Division top club Lostock A.

They also did a big favour to rivals Holcombe Brook SC A who now move smoothly back to the top spot following a simple 8-1 defeat of third placed Hawkshaw A.

The season's first clash between the Brook and College teams will occur next week.

Top South College A college couple Stuart Holloway and Jonathan Davies have now progressed to yet another round without dropping a single set so far this season.

Walmer A stamped their newly found authority on to Division Two with a neat 5-4 win over second placed Longsight Meths A leaving them a massive eight points in their wake.

Making the difference were Walmer's Dave Gerrard and Mark Davies who were the only ones to win all three on the night.

After making a strong start in Division Two, the Leigh CC. B challenge slipped when they lost to Lostock B. Their A team brothers, who have been below them in the same division, should now be able to pull themselves into the higher places over them.

When Division Three second team Next Generation (Chorley) A visited top guns Markland Hill B they went along to take no prisoners and they whacked the 'Hill team straight off the top spot with a princely 8-1 scoreline.

An opportunity for lower clubs Claremont and Walkers to step up into contention was lost when both lost to lower teams. Second bottom Barrow Bridge A played out of their skins to comfortably beat third top Claremont and adjacent team Hawkshaw B gave Walkers a 7-2 going over.

Tyldesley B entertained their neighbour and top Division Four team Ellesmere B and sprang a master plan to demolish their unbeaten superiors record and in a tight encounter.

In a nail-biting clash which went down to the last match Tyldesley's Glen Heapy and Paul Whittingham were 3-5 games down against Ellesmere's top couple Stuart and Matthew Barlow and the odds were looking like a tied fixture. However, with a superhuman effort, Paul and Glen finally brought the set back to a draw and the additional half point gave their team the 5-4 win.

However Longsight Meths B had an easier 8-1 win over bottom team Holcombe Brook SC B and they quietly take over at the top by the narrowest of margins.

The only draw in Men's tennis week occurred in Division Four when mid-table opponents Lowton and Winton S.C. clashed in their usual tight match.

David Lloyd (Bolton) A have made remarkable progress up through the Men's League and now dominate Division Five by 6-points over chasing Bolton C.C. who this week were sidelined by an open fixture. While the David Lloyd (Bolton) team still have an Open Date to play, their lead over a lacklustre opposition is already suggesting dominance in this division.

Division Six is very even and although a resurgent Harwood CC A continue to lead, there are a couple of teams just below who will put lots of pressure on them.

In beating Division Seven second placed Leigh C.C.D this week, Lostock D did

this week. This allows the Chorley team to stay in contention and regroup to allow them to defend the only unbeaten record in this division.

David Lloyd (Bolton) B team are trying to emulate their A squad by taking over the Division Eight leadership. This week they caned Walmer D 8-1, but as they still have their Open fixture to play the chances are that Ellesmere C will stay cool and stay at the top.

Just to show the friendliness which exists in local tennis is the match in this division between Eagley B and Holcombe Brook SC D who are adjacent

in the middle of Division 8. Even though the match was won 7-2 by the higher

Eagley team, the visitors wrote on the card that the it was 'a good match

played in the right spirit.

Division Nine Chorley B were the all-stars of Men's tennis with a record to die for -- until their last match against Harwood C.C. B. The Harwood squad reduced them to mincemeat in short order with a splendid 8-1 win which catapults them into the top spot.

With the Junior League fixtures now over mid season, the divisions at both ends of the table are topped by teams with massive leads and Tyldesley A and Barrow Bridge lead Divisions One and Five by a stonking eight point advantage.

This week the Tyldesley A team despatched close rivals Hawkshaw A 8-4 while Barrow Bridge did a similar job over St Josephs' C and now both look good bets for their division titles.

Of the other three divisions, missing match cards affect Divisions Two and Three and Lostock C will now be the team to beat in Division Four.

The junior Howarth Cup semi-final draw has thrown up an unusual result insofar that two clubs provide all four teams.

Lostock A play Markland Hill B and Lostock B play Markland Hill C in the other half of the draw and the result can be any one of three outcomes.

All clubs are reminded that senior registrations will cease to be valid after June 30 cut-off. Any club wishing to register any new players now have a few days only left to do this.
