Wanderers V CHARLTON

WANDERERS

4-4-2

JUSSI JAASKELAINEN ... 7

No chance with the goals; good handling and a good save from Euell

ANTHONY BARNESS ... 7

Preferred to Mendy and looked more solid; close to scoring against his old club

BRUNO N'GOTTY ... 6

Harshly penalised but was later booked needlessly for the second successive game

MIKE WHITLOW ... 7

Good, strong interventions in a typically steady performance

SIMON CHARLTON ... 7

Worked good combinations with Pedersen; caught out on the Euell goal

PAUL WARHURST ... 7

Three fierce shots but, unlike him, delivered a few wayward passes

PER FRANDSEN ... 6

Could not risk a challenge on Stuart in the build-up to Euell's winner

RICARDO GARDNER ... 6

Struggling to find his rhythm but there were boos when he was substituted

HENRIK PEDERSEN ... 8

Missed one of the chances that got away but was the game's most dangerous attacker

YOURI DJORKAEFF ... 8

Always trying something to fashion an opening; the appetite is still there

MICHAEL RICKETTS ... 6

One half-chance which he struck wide; nothing else came his way

Subs: Dean Holdsworth for Ricketts 77 mins, Kevin Nolan for Gardner 77 mins, Jonathan Walters for Frandsen 84 mins. Not used: Bernard Mendy, Kevin Poole.

Man of the Match

HENRIK PEDERSEN

8

9

SPOKE about his desire to make his mark and he fully justified his promotion to the starting line-up. Was best attacking asset.

Magic Moment

THE early goal was top quality football: the build up was good, Warhurst's shot was a screamer and Djorkaeff rounded the whole thing off showing great anticipation and opportunism.

Moan of the Match

REF Matt Messias didn't endear himself to Wanderers, especially on the two penalty "verdicts". Then he got in the way of Warhurst's pass, halting an attack before Charlton's second.

KICK BY KICK

GOAL!

2 mins: Kiely gets one hand to Warhurst's blockbusting right-footer but the ball heads towards the line where Djorkaeff races in to make sure from close range.

10 mins: Another goalbound Warhurst shot is deflected for a corner; Pedersen and Djorkaeff combine but the Dane slices his shot across goal.

15 mins: Pedersen holds the ball up well before delivering an inviting cross to the far post where Gardner heads wide, missing a sitter.

22 mins: Powell crosses and Johansson heads narrowly wide of the angle.

GOAL!

26 mins: Bart-Williams scores from the spot after N'Gotty is harshly penalised for a foul on Rufus.

32 mins: Wanderers' penalty appeals are waved away when Rufus sends Pedersen flying; Djorkaeff plays on but his shot is blocked by Young.

Half-time: Wanderers 1 Charlton 1

52 mins: Alarm bells ring at the back as Bart-Williams miscues in a good position.

53 mins: Young blocks Frandsen's shot after Djorkaeff and Pedersen create the opening.

59 mins: Pedersen shows strength and determination on the left and the cross finds Ricketts whose first time shot flashes wide.

65 mins: Jaaskelainen saves well from Euell and Charlton is on hand to clear with Stuart racing in.

66 mins: A sweeping move, started by Jaaskelainen, ends with Barness shooting inches over the bar.

67 mins: Djorkjaeff is the orchestrator and Gardner and Frandsen play a part before the Frenchman has another shot blocked by Young.

GOAL!

71 mins: Charlton counter-attack, Stuart races into the box like a runaway train and tees up Euell for a close range finish.

81 mins: It looks a stone-dead equaliser as Nolan fires in a close range shot only for Kiely to produce the save of the match.

90 mins: Charlton clears Young's dangerous cross off the line to keep Wanderers' hopes alive.

93 mins: It ends as it started with Warhurst shooting and Kiely saving - but this time there is no follow-up.

Full-time: Wanderers 1 Charlton 2
