SATURDAY: FOR the second year running Wanderers have the distinction of scoring the first goal of the new Premiership season with Michael Ricketts converting a fourth minute penalty.

But there is no repeat of last season's five-goal romp at Leicester as Fulham storm back to win 4-1. A frustrated Sam Allardyce, who substitutes new signings Jay Jay Okocha and Bernard Mendy at half-time, is critical of "woeful" defending.

MONDAY

IN the wake of the Fulham defeat, Allardyce steps up his search for new recruits before the August 31 deadline, repeating his need for a defender and a striker. Gudni Bergsson explains why he squared up to Fulham's Boa Morte at the end of the first half at Loftus Road, complaining that the Bolton players suspected he had earlier fallen deliberately and "nastily" on Okocha. Youri Djorkaeff sympathises with Mendy and Okocha who struggled to adjust to the pace of the Premiership. Argentine striker Seb Scalise has a runout for Wanderers' Reserves who are beaten 2-1 by Liverpool. Dean Holdsworth gets the Bolton goal.

TUESDAY

BERGSSON expects Wanderers to respond positively to the Fulham defeat when they take on Charlton at the Reebok. "This was a wake-up call for us," he admits.

WEDNESDAY

ALLARDYCE expresses doubts that he will be get the players he wants before the deadline. Real Madrid defender Ivan Campo will have to come on Wanderers' terms or not at all while he is struggling to put together a financial package to entice former Spurs striker Chris Armstrong. Jussi Jaaskelainen is on the receiving end as Finland go down 3-0 to the Republic of Ireland in Helsinki. Bernard Mendy scores in France's 2-1 victory over Iceland in an U21 friendly.

THURSDAY

OKOCHA is ruled out for two weeks with a knee ligament injury and Bergsson is doubtful for the Charlton game with a similar problem. Danish club Midtjylland make an approach for Bo Hansen.

FRIDAY

ALLARDYCE admits he must offload players before he can add to his squad. The manager also calls for clubs to work together to stave off financial disaster. "You can't have clubs almost going out of business because they are getting relegated."
