A NEW comedy by John Godber - Black Tie and Tales - starts at the Octagon on Thursday night.
Godber is directing the performance by the Hull Truck Theatre Company himself.
Black Tie and Tales tells the outrageously comic story of a black tie evening seen through the eyes of the cynical and truculent staff of Bagley Hall. It's Upstairs Downstairs turned inside out.
The men are tuxedoed, the ladies drip with diamonds, and you simply can't move for fake tan, bucks fizz and cummerbunds. The jazz band has arrived, the raffle is ready, and the places are set.
But the guest speaker is speechless, the wives are restless, and the pheasant is off. Come 10pm, the sophistication slips and the demons gradually come out. It is billed as an hilarious observational play written by one of the UK's most prolific and popular playwrights.
