SEVEN of Bolton's best young boxers showed off their skills in front of a British champion at an open tournament in Farnworth.

The fighters from New Bury and Farnworth Amateur Boxing Club took part in the competition, which raised £4.000 for Christie's Hospital in Manchester.

Walkden's British light-middleweight champion Jamie Moore was at the tournament, held at Farnworth Veterans Club, to encourage the youngsters.

He picked out 14-year-old Billy Blower as the best boxer of the night, and awarded Darren Balshaw, aged 22, the prize for the best bout of the night.

New Bury members Leon Carr and Danny Oldham, both aged 14, won their bouts.

Luke Brown, aged 13, Jordan Powell, aged 15, and Lewis Davis, aged 12, also flew the flag for New Bury at the tournament.

The club raised £4,000 on the night, and have donated half of that money to the .

Club members decided to split the proceeds with the charity as a thank you to Farnworth businessman Colin Quigley, who sponsored the evening and has been a long-time supporter of the club.

Quigley, who runs Small Talk Mobile Phones, is recovering from throat cancer.

Eddie Birchall, the coach at New Bury, said: "It was a great night. We sold out the venue in no time.

"Everyone at the club would like to wish Colin all the best. We can't wait for him to come back to the club.

"I'd also like to thank Pete Magari, who is the father of one of the lads at the club. He has taken over the matchmaking side of organising the fights, and he has done a brilliant job.

"We're also grateful to the staff and New Bury Community Centre for all the help they have given us."
