RETAIL giant Asda has announced plans to transform its clothing range into a global brand.

The supermarket group, which has 10 of its 265 UK stores in the region, is to relaunch the George collection as George Global, and hopes to create more than 100 jobs for the British fashion industry in the next two years.

The George range, created by fashion entrepreneur George Davies, has grown rapidly since its launch in 1990, and after Wal-Mart's 1999 acquisition of the company, it has become Britain's second largest clothing retailer.

The range will be sold in the UK as well as at Wal-Mart's 5,000 stores in the US.
