From the Evening News, May 26, 1904: PC Aaron Edge was yesterday presented by the Watch Committee with the second-class merit badge and £1 from Mr Deakin for the plucky manner in which he stopped a runaway horse on Tuesday evening.

The horse, which was attached to a carriage, dashed out of the yard of Mr Adams, veterinary surgeon, Bradshawgate, and bolted across the road to the Balmoral Hotel. The animal crashed into a street lamp, smashing one of the glasses and also breaking the window of the carriage. PC Edge seized the horse as it was bolting and pluckily stuck to it, until he obtained the mastery.

In Newport large numbers of men are sent to prison by the Magistrates for begging, sleeping out and similar offences, but the invasion of these "undesirables" still continues.

From the Evening News, May 26, 1954: MR and Mrs Arthur Beck, North Vale, Heath Charnock, are proud of their triplet daughters - Kathleen, Christine and Maureen - not just because they are the only triplets for miles around, but because they are extremely bright. Each has won a scholarship to Mount St Joseph's Grammar School. They are only 10 and they took the examination a year early. But they have to wait a whole year before they are old enough to leave their junior school, St Joseph's RC, Anderton.

BOLTON Wanderers' commercial manager, Alf Davies, got the boot today - but in the nicest possible way.
