YOUNG people in Blackrod and Horwich are taking advantage of a new youth service.

Youth Express is a scheme run jointly between Rivington and Blackrod High School and Bolton Youth Service to improve facilities for young people in the area.

Organisers ran a competition for the youngsters to come up with a new name for what was previously The Horwich and Blackrod Community Youth Project.

Hannah Berry, a Year 10 pupil at the school, won with her logo and the name "Youth Express".

The competition was judged by John Baumber, executive principal of the school, who presented Hannah with a mini CD player.

With funding from the New Opportunities Fund, Youth Express will offer services to young people aged nine to 13 on the lower school site at Rivington and Blackrod High.

Those aged 14 and over will be catered for at the former Fox Street Youth Club.

Lisa Colley, who used to work at Westhoughton Youth Drop In, will be responsible for Youth Express.

"Already, young people are engaging in the project and it is great to see how they are working to develop its identity," said Mr Baumber.
