RE the closure of St Peter's & Paul RC Church in Bolton.

Having read the letter from K Hagan in Canada regarding Mr Smith and the possible, if not definite, closure of this magnificent church, I also hope and pray the Catholic hierarchy at Wardley stop and rethink what they plan to do.

This church and parish have served the Catholic community in Bolton for over 200 years, and without it, I and thousands of other Catholics, would not be here in this town, if it was not for the minority of a decent honest, hardworking generation, who, despite pure hatred and bigotry towards Catholics at that time in this town and country, built a church and parish for a community to pray and be together and to live in peace.

With all the hatred and wars going on in our generation at this time, how awful to learn that a place of peace and a place steeped in history may be bulldozed at a stroke of a pen.

Perhaps Bishop Brain will come and spend some time at this church, sit and pray, meet the parishioners, then rethink.

We must keep this church and parish alive and open -- for the past generations, for the present, and for the future. But more importantly -- for God.
