ATHLETES from Bolton Harriers and Horwich RMI Harriers won a glut of medals at the Greater Manchester Championships at Stretford.

Bolton's Hazel Carwardine set a new championship best performance of 12.17m in the senior women's triple jump and won a second gold medal in the senior women long jump as well as bronze in the senior women's 100m.

Brian Hall set a new championship best performance in the senior men's high jump of 2.10m.

Andrew Jones won gold with a new personal best jump of 4m in the senior men's pole vault and Rachael Pounds also came first in the under-15 women's 800m with a time of 2.20.2.

More gold medals went to Naomi Hall in the under-15 girls' shot (9.46m), discus (25.26m) and javelin (25.46m), Jemima Hall in the senior women hammer (30.24m) and Michael O'Donnell in the under-15 pole vault (2.00m) as well as silver in the discus (14.16m) and bronze in the shot (5.44m).

Other medal winners included Katie Smith (silver) in the senior women's 3000m, Ben Caldwell (silver) in the senior men's 400m, Chris Perrey (silver) in the senior men's 400m hurdles, Richard Cornwell (bronze) in the senior men's 400m hurdles, Melanie McCoy (silver) in the senior women's pole vault and Sam Aspen (bronze) in the senior women's 200m.

Horwich juniors' top performer was under-13 Peter Ramsden who won a gold in the long jump and two bronze in the 100m and 200m.

Under-15 Bruce Pilkington won gold in the 400m and silver in the 200m while Rachel Thompson won gold in the junior ladies' 3000m and was unlucky to finish fourth in the 1500m. Jack Thomas won silver in the under-15 100m.

Lauren Ashton won bronze in the under-15 80m hurdles and Becky Crompton took bronze in the high jump and fourth in the 80m hurdles.

Horwich's Vicky Snape won gold in the under-20 800m (2.20sec) at the Lancashire Championships at Blackpool while the first Young Athletes Meeting of the year at Leverhulme Park was an outstanding success for the Horwich RMI Harrier juniors.

Despite the strong competition from Bolton Harriers and from Bury, East Cheshire, Chorley, Blackley and North Manchester, the strength and quality of the Horwich athletes were evident.

Outstanding performances included under-13 Josh Dunn's first in the 100m in 14sec. Under-13 Beth Pilkington and Lexi Cochrane finished first and second in the 70m hurdles in 14.7 and 14.8 and under-15 Becky came first in the 75m hurdles in 13.2 seconds.

Under-15s Josh Bettis, Jack Thomas, Bruce Pilkington and Matthew Hamnett took first or second places in the 100m, 200m, 400m, long jump, discus and 4 x100m relay.
