MORE money than ever is being spent on water services in the North-west, figures have revealed.

United Utilities has spent more than £1 billion - £3 million a day - in the North-west as part of their regional investment programme.

The pre-tax profit made by the water company was £349 million. News of the record-breaking investment comes as United Utilities submits its business plan for the next five years.

It has estimated the next round of water quality and environmental improvements will cost £3.2 billion.

Consumers can expect to see further rises in water bills, despite a 12 per cent price hike already this year. The average household bill is estimated to increase from £255 this year to £356 in 2009.
