A SCHEME to make a housing estate in Leigh safer has been hailed a success by residents.
Residents who live on the Trees Estate gave the £45,000 makeover a thumbs up after 176 new street lights were installed by Wigan Council.
Keith Benson, the council's street scene and lighting manager, said: "We've worked hard to get this right for the people of the Trees Estate and are delighted there has been such a positive welcome.
"Overwhelmingly residents wanted us to fit new white daylight lamps. These make it easier to distinguish clothing and vehicle colours and allow good facial recognition."
He added that more than 80 per cent of residents believed the installation of lights had been council money well spent.
